5 Ways to Overcome Fear
We’ve all been there. We have a goal in mind and we are ready to execute it. We are so motivated that nothing can stop us, not even our own thoughts. Then a couple weeks go by and it starts dwindling down. The fast track to an unstoppable dream starts turning into a slow track at Disney World. Another year goes by and we wonder what happened, how did we lose the motivation? The answer is fear. Fear holds us back from most things that we choose not to accomplish.
The nervous system processes every experience we have through our 5 senses; sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. This means that every minute of every day we are processing everything we encounter through our senses and label it as good or bad. This comes in the form of pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells, and even our self talk.
Imagine yourself at 4 years old, dancing around without a care in the world. Then you grow up to think that you’re a bad dancer and don’t want to dance in front of anyone. How does this even happen? Each time a negative event occurs in our lives we store it in our subconscious mind. We store the way that it felt, what we heard, tasted, smelled, and saw. Then, as we take in new events, it will compare what we experienced with what has previously happened to us. For example, a child getting picked last for a baseball team might decide to avoid sports or exercise as he gets older because his subconscious is associating it with a negative experience.
Our brain takes in 2 million bits of data per second but it only analyzes around 134 bits per second. That means there is about 1,999,866 bits of data that aren’t even stored in our brain! Every memory we have is diluted which brings the true question, is anything even real?
Whether you believe it or not, your subconscious mind is holding you back because it’s protecting you from your biggest fear.
Is it fear of failure? Fear of rejection? Fear of not being good enough? The universal fear amongst all humans is that we aren’t good enough. I am here to tell you that your only fear should be that you didn’t take the chance.
The strongest emotion will always win the race. Fear is a very strong emotion, but stronger than fear is the feeling of passion, hope, and love.
Here are 5 ways that you can overcome your fear to get what you want:
Visualize- Practice visualizing doing the very thing you are afraid of. If you fear public speaking, visualize yourself speaking in front of a group and succeeding every time. Our brains cannot distinguish what we are imagining and what is actually happening which will boost your confidence level to overcome your fear.
Be scared and do it anyway- If you keep avoiding something because you fear it then you’ll have lasting negative feelings about it. Once you face your fears it won’t be as teasing to you.
Don’t be a perfectionist (you are human!)- The more we focus on making something perfect, the more likely we are to back out of it. Perfectionism leads to burnout and stress because we will never think that we are good enough.
Do it right away- The more delay doing the very thing we are afraid of, the more time we have to give self talk and are more likely to make excuses for ourselves. Make the decision to do it, AND DO IT. For example, if you decide on a whim you want to run a 5k, sign up for a 5k right away with enough time to train. This means you have promised yourself that you will get it done.
Talk about it with someone- Once you say your fears out loud, it suddenly becomes real to you. Saying it out loud will help you hear it for yourself and might change your outlook. Talking with someone might also give you the external motivation you need to move forward and break through.
A wellness coach in Orlando, FL can significantly help you break through your limitations and conquer the things that you have always dreamt of doing.
I encourage you to think about why you aren’t moving forward with something and dig deep. Once you have identified what your fear is then move forward with the steps above to get you in the right direction.
