Leadership Qualities You Can’t Afford To Leave Out If You Want To Be Effective

During my speeches I usually ask the audience how many of them are leaders and I usually get about 25% of people raising their hand. What the people with their hands down don’t realize is that we are all leaders in different ways.

When I think of leadership I think of the word influence. The ability to influence others thoughts, actions, and energy in an inspiring way.

We are all leaders of our own lives and we are leaders especially if we are parents. WE have our own thoughts, actions, and energy that we present to individuals each and every day.

Dr. Carol Kinsey Goman conducted some studies to prove that followers are looking for two main qualities within a leader:

Authority and Warmth

Can you guess which gender normally brings authority and which normally brings warmth?

Men have naturally been designed to bring power, credibility, and status while women also carry these qualities but are more likely to bring empathy, likeability, and a caring aspect.

Do you know who I think of as a leader who projects both authority and warmth together? You guessed it, Obama.

I could see him crying and hugging someone at the same time as leading his authoritarian voice when needed. There are many other examples, but his is the prime for a male who knows have to bring both to the table. The warmth piece is asking a primary question, can you handle being vulnerable as a leader? Do you see vulnerability as a weakness?

Are you able to identify what you bring to the table more to those who you are leading?

Identify your strengths and leverage them, but don’t forget to leverage bringing more warmth or authority to a situation.

I offer various workshops to companies and groups that want to lead better and with their own voice, especially as a women.
